Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment
March 25, 2025
The fibrous tissue which surrounds the wrist is known as the carpal region. This is the tight spaces between this fibrous band and the wrist bone. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel to receive sensations from the thumb, index, and middle fingers of the hand.
The swelling around or a change in position of the tissue within the carpal tunnel can squeeze and irritate the median nerve which causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
This is a painful progressive condition that occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm to the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist. sometimes this problem originates in the vertebra of the neck, if this is the case then we may be able to help you at Complete Chiropractic.
Causes and Risk Factors
The development of carpal tunnel syndrome is often multifaceted, with several contributing factors. Whilst the condition can affect anyone, it is most prevalent in middle-aged women and individuals engaged in repetitive hand movements. Some key risk factors include:
* Repetitive hand and wrist movements
* Anatomical variations in wrist structure
* Hormonal changes during pregnancy
* Underlying medical conditions
* Workplace ergonomics and hand-intensive activities
Interestingly, many patients develop carpal tunnel syndrome without a clearly identifiable cause, making early recognition and treatment crucial.
Recognising Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms
Symptoms typically develop gradually and can significantly impact daily functioning. Patients often experience a progression of discomfort that can disrupt sleep and normal hand activities. The most common symptoms include:
* Persistent pain in the hand and wrist
* Weakness in hand grip strength
* Numbness in the fingers
* Tingling or "pins-and-needles" sensation
* Nighttime pain that may awaken the individual
The sensations usually affect the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers, gradually worsening over time if left untreated.
Diagnostic Approach
Diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome requires a comprehensive medical evaluation. Healthcare professionals typically conduct a thorough physical examination, assessing hand strength, sensation, and nerve function. In some cases, the condition may be linked to issues in the cervical vertebrae, necessitating a broader examination of the nervous system.
Diagnostic methods may include:
* Detailed physical examination
* Nerve conduction studies
* Electromyography
* Assessment of hand and wrist movement
* Review of medical history and symptoms
Treatment Options
Treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome aims to reduce inflammation, relieve nerve compression, and address underlying conditions. A comprehensive approach typically involves:
* Non-invasive therapeutic interventions
* Wrist splinting and supportive devices
* Physical therapy and exercises
* Modification of repetitive hand activities
* Potential surgical intervention in severe cases
Special Considerations for Specific Populations
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can significantly increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome due to hormonal changes and fluid retention. Expectant mothers may experience:
* Increased wrist swelling
* More pronounced numbness and tingling
* Temporary changes in hand function
Chiropractic care and conservative treatments can help manage symptoms during this vulnerable period.
Prevention and Management Strategies
Preventing carpal tunnel syndrome involves a proactive approach to hand and wrist health. Recommendations include:
* Maintaining proper ergonomics
* Taking regular breaks during repetitive tasks
* Performing stretching exercises
* Using ergonomic tools and equipment
* Managing underlying health conditions
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Key Takeaways
Understanding carpal tunnel syndrome is the first step towards effective management. Whilst the condition can be challenging, numerous treatment options exist to help patients find relief and restore hand function. Early recognition, professional evaluation, and a comprehensive treatment approach are key to managing this complex condition.
We would aim to decrease the local swelling and inflammation in the carpal tunnel itself, while relaxing the muscles of the forearm. Treatment will work to uncover and treat any underlying conditions that contribute to the development of Carpel Tunnel Syndrome.
